Persicaria tinctoria

Days to Maturity: 75

Japanese Indigo is one of the main natural dye plants, producing beautiful, deep blue dye from its leaves. It has been used traditionally in Japan for centuries to dye fabrics including silk and cotton. As an easy-to-grow annual, it is a must in any natural dye garden.

Grown by Bluebird Dye Gardens in Dolores, CO.

Planting Instructions: Plant Japanese Indigo seeds in flats indoors. Plant only 1/4" deep and tamp down soil on top. Keep just moist until germinated. Transplant seedlings outdoors into full sun after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 65 degrees. Plant 8"-12" apart. Do not use a heat mat. Indigo plants can be trimmed throughout the season for natural dye and will grow again.

Seed Saving Instructions: Allow some flowers to go to seed. Collect Japanese Indigo seeds when they turn black and dry. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.

Approx 50 Japanese Indigo seeds per packet
