Also known as Lady’s Leek, Allium cernuum is easy to spot by the graceful bend at the top of its stem. Above its slender, grass-like leaves, each stem holds a small cluster of pink flowers that gently nod downward, following the curve that gives the plant its characteristic bow. Each slender, tubular blossom hangs gracefully, creating a subtle movement in breezy conditions that draws the eye and attracts a variety of bees, while also calling in butterflies and hummingbirds. Its nodding flowers add a graceful vertical accent, while its bulbs slowly multiply, creating colonies over time.

This allium species has a long history of culinary and practical use among Indigenous communities, who harvested the bulbs for food and seasoning. Though its flavor is milder than the cultivated onion, it retains that characteristic garlicky-onion aroma and can be used fresh or cooked in a variety of dishes. Beyond its edible qualities, Nodding Onion is appreciated for its low-maintenance growth habit, drought tolerance, and adaptability to well-drained soils, making it ideal for native gardens, pollinator-friendly landscapes, and xeriscaping projects.
